Fit at 50 Part 4: An Invitation for Awakening Your Own Curiosity

As I enter my 50s, I am committed to exploring and increasing my curiosity. Shifting my perspective is liberating and has positively contributed to improvements in my health, wellness and happiness. How I view my body, my fuel, and my Spiritual life stem from my belief in the value of curiosity.

Last week, I celebrated my birthday with my 81-year-old dad in Southern California. He offered a lovely toast about what it means to him that I am turning 50, the fourth of his four children to do so.

Dad expressed gratitude for making it to my 50th, as well as my sister Alexa’s, my brother Alex’s, and my sister Andrea’s 50th.    He didn’t think he’d make it to any or all due to health complications. Dad’s words reminded me how precious and uncertain life really is. He reflected on my boarding a plane at 22 to pursue my “dream” in DC and never returned to California. He spoke of how I shifted from a political animal to a gym owner. (He wasn’t crazy about the idea!) Most importantly, he shared the pride he feels watching all four of his children thrive in life.

This birthday moment reinforced my drive to fully embrace life. For me, it means being real and honest with myself, remembering every day that I am a gift from God, and that most other things are truly secondary, if not further down the list.

Writing this series about what it means to be Fit at 50 (and any age) has been a blessing. It’s an opportunity to strip down what it means to take care of my body, provide it with wholesome fuel, and maintain my moral compass to guide my interactions with myself and others.

Make no mistake, your curious, authentic me can also color my hair, love my lotions and potions, and workout in an evening gown. Yet, what is most important to me is who I am and how I approach every day – my inner voice is positive and loving and my relations with others the same.

I would take contentedness over highlights any day of the week. I’d embrace living through the uncomfortable and gaining amazing insight over any lip color. And, I would take my healthy relationship with who I am over designer jeans.

I would take loving my husband for who he is and adoring our children for who they are over a glass of good champagne! I appreciate every single client for who they are and what they bring to our FOR community over capturing another 100 clients to “grow” FOR. I would take a weekend break to just “be family” over a vacation to Normandy (where we really want to go!).

Positivity matters. Green Bay Packers’ quarterback Aaron Rodgers was interviewed after winning a wild playoff game that put them in the NFC championship.  He said he was “just thinking about breathing and trying to steady that… I felt very calm and I was very positive in the huddle.”

We can all approach our days like that.  .  .  breathing, calm and positive.

As you approach this year aiming for true health and fitness, I invite you to consider these questions:

  • Can you look at every new day as just that…a new day and a new opportunity to learn and love?
  • Can you view circumstances not through the lens of winning and losing or good or bad but as opportunities for growth?
  • Can you cherish friendships yet realize the friendship with yourself is the one that is the most rewarding?
  • Can you press pause more this year to consider your compass and inner voice as beacons of strength?
  • Can you live every day adoring your body, fueling it with loving care, giving it the exercise it needs, and broadening your spiritual and emotional curiosity to make this truly the best year ever?

I will!
